The Wedding Feast at Cana
Arguably the most famous painting of the depiction of Jesus's first miracle, The Wedding Feast at Cana is a huge oil painting completed in 1563 by Paolo Veronese. In this painting Veronese breaks away from his High Renaissance predecessors and firmly plants himself in the Late Renaissance Mannerist tradition. Mannerism exaggerated the Renaissance ideals – of figure, light, and colour – with asymmetric and unnaturally elegant arrangements achieved by flattening the pictorial space and distorting the human figure as an ideal preconception of the subject, rather than as a realistic representation. This style works exceptionally well for Sacred Art as it puts the emphasis on the ideal, or divinity of a person, as will be seen in their resurrected heavenly state, as opposed to their fallen human nature.
I love the movement and the energy of this painting- there is much happening! But even in the face of all the hustle and bustle, Jesus and Mary remain calm and focused on the mission at hand.
A fun fact about this painting- it hangs opposite the Mona Lisa in the Louvre Museum in Paris and it is the grandest painting on display. Its scale is so enormous that when you stand before it, you feel as though you are within it.
