St. Joan of Arc
When standing before this painting, one feels as if they are totally enveloped within its tangled, homely garden, enraptured in a spiritual trance alongside St. Joan. The real-life painting stretches in over 9 feet in either direction, making its proportions almost life-sized and all-encompassing.
St. Joan of Arc was painted by Jules Bastien-Lepage in 1879. It is an oil painting of massive scale depicting the moment of her deeply spiritual encounter where she heard the voices of Saints Catherine of Alexandria, Margaret the Virgin and the Archangel Michael urging her to lead the French into battle against the English. This momentous vision forever changed the course of both her history (as a then young 13 year old girl) as well as France's history.
"Consider this unique and imposing distinction. Since the writing of human history began, Joan of Arc is the only person, of either sex, who has ever held supreme command of the forces of a nation at the age of seventeen." - Louis Kossuth
