Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee
Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee is an oil painting completed in 1633 by Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn. Many consider it to be Rembrandt's earliest painting, completed when he was only 29, and is one of his largest. The painting depicts the biblical event when Jesus calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee as described in all three Synoptic Gospels- (Matthew, Mark and Luke's).
The painting is intensely dramatic full of deep contrast of light, rich in meaning and special beauty. It depicts the moment of fear and terror the disciples were feeling during the storm held in sharp contrast to the tranquility of Christ. Rembrandt was a master of light and even in this early painting we can see how he uses light to draw our attention to the left side of the painting- the place of most chaos. Jesus is distinguished from the others by a subtle halo and in his calm demeanor, which is evident in his repose. The painter, in a self-portrait, stares straight at the viewer in the center of the painting as if to demonstrate to us that we are no different than any disciple on that ship. We too experience complete terror and anguish when we do not trust in God. The magnificent work does not only portray a situation of anguish, but the anguish itself of living life without complete faith in He who can calm the seas.
