Adoration of the Trinity
This oil painting originally done on poplar wood for a private altarpiece is a gorgeous depiction of the Holy Trinity by Albrecht Durer. Completed in 1511 it depicts God the Father holding up a still alive, crucified Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the form of the dove, hovering above in a cloud of cheribum. To the left stands the Virgin Mother, and to the right, St. John the Baptist, leading a multitude of Saints behind them. Beneath them, throngs of laity and religious men and women gather, led by the Pope and Holy Roman Emperor. The division between religious and laity is similar to depictions in previous paintings of Durer's, the universal call to holiness is clear.
There is much to contemplate and pray with in this painting. I particularly am drawn to the obvious physical connection between The Trinity, their relationship which brings the three individual persons into One. It is the same call for us all, after all- relationship through love, as we are called to the same loving relationship with all of our brothers and sisters in Christ as The Trinity models perfectly for us.
