Flight of the Holy Family to Egypt
I just love this study done in 1881 with oil paint by Brazilian painter José Ferraz de Almeida Júnior. I love its soft colors and pastel sunset illuminating Mary's mantel as the Christ child playfully opens it. I am also particularly moved by the angel guiding them along. What a beautiful reminder of the presence of our guardian angel everywhere we go! St. Joseph took his family to Egypt immediately upon being told in a dream to do so. He didn't have a plan for when they got there. It wasn't premeditated. God said to go, and so St. Joseph went. His complete and total faith in God is a powerful example for us all!
This is a gorgeous painting for a variety of occasions. It would make a lovely gift for a newly married couple, or as a housewarming gift as it ties in beautifully with today's color palettes. It also makes a perfect gift for any of the Sacraments.
