L'Incontro di Dante e Beatrice
L'Incontro di Dante e Beatrice, or the first meeting of Dante and Beatrice, is a gorgeous oil painting done in 1897 by Italian painter Raffaello Sorbi. Sorbi specialized in narrative paintings which tell a specific story about a moment in time. Not much is known about Sorbi and his paintings and mostly all are held in private collections. In the late 1980's into the early 1900s he painted a series of paintings surrounding Dante and his love Beatrice. He must have been fascinated by both Dante and Dante's love of Beatrice, or perhaps he was intrigued by how love can inspire a journey to Christ which is so evident in Dante's Divine Comedy.
I love how in this particular painting, even amongst the hustle and movement of Florence's busy streets, the presence of Beatrice alone is enough to stop Dante in his tracks. Is this not what Love does to us? When we come in contact with Christ- Love itself- we are stopped in our tracks and all else fades away.
